Conversations build Culture

|Vrinda Singh

This week we’re figuring out packaging for Moli.Boli. And while wrestling with box margins and Gen Z slang in 8 languages, I realised something big.

Most of us think of ‘culture’ as we would a museum exhibit— a nostalgic nod to the old ways.

But... culture is ALIVE. Messy and joyful and intelligent. Here and now!

I started Moli.Boli thinking okay if my daughters know 500 basic words in Hindi, then they could have a decent conversation with people back home. Ask for directions. Order chai (and know to ALSO add pakoras). Most importantly, I figured they could share their own inside jokes with the grandparents without me playing translator. Cultural roots, check.

But who am I kidding? Culture isn’t pictures in a box. Culture is a living breathing entity to be felt and seen and heard. The ‘Western’ version of India is spicy food, vibrant colours and fabulous music— easiest to access if you’re growing up outside India.

But then. Am I going to be happy with my kids knowing just that glossy stuff we bring out at their weddings and tuck away forever again? It’s what Jaya Bacchan did for KarvaChauth. And while I love KC (bite me!!) I would love to help my kids dig just a bit deeper and discover the wonder and spice and joy of their heritage.

How ‘Adjust’ is a thing. Because 1.3 billion people are navigating their way home through 5 billion cars and 6 trillion cows while also catching up on the latest micro dramas.

'Jugaad’ is a thing. Because we  have a billion plus people competing for extremely limited resources (college seats and jobs and last vada pav)  in a day defined by the most fluid notions of time.

Personal space (and the lack of it) is a thing. Because the person behind you on the plane REALLY wants their handbag first.

Drama is a thing. Because literally no one goes through life in India without referencing at least one of Amitabh Bacchan, Rajnikant or SRK. Would it be toss up between Prabhas and Ranveer?

Music is a thing. Because everyone’s heard Lata ji. Diljit Dosanjh is legit. You can’s top Naatu Naatu’s moves. Rebel is frikkin amazing. Also. Coke Studio.

Stories are a thing. Because grandmothers make the best food and spice up daily life too. Birbal and the Panchatantra could give the Avengers and Peppa a run for their money. And yes, the Panchatantra is pretty bloodthirsty I have to agree. But still. Really good stories.

Tradition is a thing. Because we’re among the oldest civilisations on this planet and frankly, we’re gorgeous in our diversity.

Culture is all these tiny everyday things that make a part of you belong somewhere.

And if you grow up in the diaspora, those things can disappear quietly. Not all at once. Just slowly enough that one day your kids understand your language... but not your world.

That’s the part driving Moli.Boli

As a diaspora mom myself, I know some parents might worry about culture loss — and the last thing we need is another guilt trip, or another item on our to-do list.

So instead of turning culture into homework, we're building tiny conversation starters with Moli.Boli. Playful nudges. Small moments that help families share stories about the worlds they came from — and the ones the kids may someday choose to explore for themselves.

The challenge we accepted? Finding a way to communicate those small, everyday magical things to our young people so they move beyond stereotypes and get excited about digging into their own heritage.

Our Toddler Collection is open for pre-orders.

The Grandparent Edit lands soon!

And we’re just getting started!!
